Culture is still evolving in some countries. FAR too slowly, to be sure, but all the time in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, there are hopeful signs that for SOME people, education for all citizens is important-- and that is where it must start.

It's all about power. Same mentality as the Klan going around and doing all they could to keep blacks from getting a decent education.

Back to the middle east, If the women are allowed to think, then goodness the men in those countries might have to change their ways and give up some of their ultimate power. No wonder any study on how to increase someone's standard of living concludes that education is where you get the biggest bang for the buck. And where there is a lot to gain at the expense of a powerful group, there will be a lot of opposition. The irony is that if women would be educated over there, it would be a win-win...but many are blind to this.

dude, u r generalizing too much to blame all Muslims for such an act. This is in NO way related to Religion 'Islam'. This is a city crime matter, which u r using to somehow defame Islam. Lots of drive-bys goes on in newyork, and many a ppl die everyday there, even women of any such power, why don't u blame the whole of Christianity then there? its a city crime problem, and leave it till there, Do NOT try to somehow mingle it with The Religion thing that its NOT. its really a sad thing that what happened and i feel sorry for her and her family's loss, and May ALLAH Bless Her in The Best of Heaven (Firdaus). Islam obligates for everyone to seek knowledge and be educated (Even women), and Islam gives women equal power to that of men, and infact Islam is The 1st to elevate the status of a woman than there ever has been, and still thus. but, if some political cleric wanted her dead than its a state crime NOT a Religion crime. Islam does NOT in any way hold women to a lower standard.
Islam holds women on the same standard and as high as men. They both are equals in almost every manner. Peace to All.
P.S. ... its really a sad thing for what happened, and these terrorists should be tracked and given a public execution, but they DO NOT have anything to do with Islam, Islam shouldn't be judged on account of such incidents. Islam has Always Elevated the standard of women to men itself. Peace to All.

Your not going to get any real information here.People who do know the facts spout their ignorance and try to shift blame and don't even answer the question. I can't quote the koran. but I have vivid memories of the TV documentary Beneath the Vail or behind the Vail by Christyianne Amonpur(sp) on the Taliban brutality. But I don't think there is much of that here in America, unless the woman is really weak minded. Over there if the women had power they would put men in prison for their stupid actions. But still the muslim women accept the subservience. I try to ignore them. You can't help anyone who doesn't want help.

It not that they're Muslim, that just happens to be there religion. That whole looking down on women thing is a product of thier local culture, it has nothinig to do with religion. Aghans in general hold women in low esteem, muslim or not. So do alot of other middle eastern cultures. I'm a muslim...and I have utmost respect for women.

Do you think a large number of educated women would put up with the crap that those male cretins subject them to if they knew anything?
Schooling would destory their hold on things.

Besides mercy killings...women have rights no greater than that of a dog...and a man can have a multitude of wives but the wife must be the respecter of but one husband...sounds equal to me,,,not.

First, don't lump all Muslims together. That was the work of fanatics. Christians have fanatics doing rediculous things as well.

Second, fanatics like that live in fear. Fear of loss of faith. Education might cause these women to lose their faith.
