your extra weight is probably coming from the alcohol (7 calories per gram). adding a protein shake will only worsen the problem because you're just adding additional calories to your weekly intake. however, if you wanna subsitute protein shakes for alcochol ;-) that might work since proteins only contain 4 calories per gram, and they're said to require extra energy (calories) to digest due to their nitrogen content.

Protien shakes are an extra source of protiens.
Switch to spirits or hard liqour if you can (or none at all) although numerous studies say one beer or glass of wine is "benificial" for blood circulation.
Protien shakes are a source of protien and water (liquid)
Have it "before" that way the protien is already for digestion immediately. but make sure there is time for the stuff to decompose. If need be have 1/2 before half after. It is all about how much protien and oils are available for cell repair and construction.
Learn about the digestive system, enzymes etc..
it is is fairly simple.
Read about growth hormones and steroids too, (legal steroids) make sure you adequettely research your intake.
However the benifit of a shake is that you don't get the fats that are commonly in with other protien sources such as "meat"
When you are aiming for 3L of water daily other fluid sources are a good way of chugging plain water.
What may be good is chugging some water with a little bit of glucose or fruit juice just before lifting ect.. to supply a little more ATP.. too much sugar is bad though.
So also take into consideration the ingrediants in the protien shake.

There's nothing wrong with protein shakes. Just check the sugar level...I was shocked during pre-weight-loss surgery to find out what is actually in a Slimfast shake.
Sure, it does "bulk you up." Because in the typcal boring fashion, if you take in more calories than you burn off, you gain weight. There are tons of theories about creatine, protein calories, etc. But the simple formula is still burn more than you take in = weight loss.
So the answer to your question is that basically it doesn' matter where the extra calories come from; 3200 still equal a pound.Get them from protein shakes or from your beer or from McDonald's...still calories, still the same equation.

Whey protien absorbs fast
Soy protien absorbs slower
It is a good i dea to always have a small (whey) shake before you work out, maybe an hour before so you have the energy and a regular soy protien shake right after to continually feed muscles you have worked out. You will find that you have faster recovery periods if you stick to this regiment. You don't need to eat protien shakes all day if you only want to tone up.
