I just found out that a friend from the past married her first cousin. I was a bit put off by it at first (ok, I was grossed-out). But, I guess it is not completely unheard of. I just want to get a feel of how people feel about this, and if anyone can provide some examples of cultures/societies that deem this acceptable. What do you think?

To clarify, they are first cousins. Their mothers are blood sisters.

(woa... i just stepped in the door and this was the first question on the list)
that is just so uncool... and i think it is illegal in the U.S. (or it ought to be if it isn't). i didn't think it still happened, but here it is! half of my girl cousins are models, and I would never consider marrying, making out, or doing-it with them. as already eloquently stated by previous posters... "NASTY!!!"

In America, that is illegal. It is illegal under the laws of consanguinity. You can be no closer than 2nd or 3rd cousins,
depending on the state. That is dangerous reproductively as well. Beyond that, you're right, that's gross. Lots of societies have at some point condoned this, but most, if not all, Western cultures have moved away from this due to inbreeding problems.

The thought grosses me out too. Jerry Lee Lewis married his first cousin and she was only 14 y/o. He wasn't exactly a social outcast after that so I don't know how other people feel.

Ya, that is just wrong and I am not sure there are any cultures that except that. They absolutely should not reproduce and as I think about it isn't it against the law? Or is that just immediate family? Anyway, ya, grossed out would be an understatement unless there are the words Step or By Marriage, that just freaks me out.

Family is family and when you decide to marry a blood relative a lot of complications can rise from that. Children being born with deffects, etc. I personally wouldnt marry cousins, my cutest cousin looks like my brother (of course we are related) no way i could see myself sleeping with someone that looks like my brother.

I believe that's illegal in most states. I know a couple who are first cousins, and all of their children are either deaf or brain-damaged.

This can cause severe birth defects with first cousins and their children. But people do it. I wouldn't!

Um... that is just nasty. I can't imagine marrying any of my cousins (as beautiful as they are). That's just nasty.
