If I am in bed reading a book or newspaer, he starts licking the edge of the pages. He once found the phone book and start going to town. I asked the vet and she thought I was nuts. Is it a behavioral problem or would he be lacking some type of nutrient in his diet?

Sometimes cats like the smell of the paper so they start to lick it, this is very normal. Also when he does this when you are in bed reading, perhaps he wants you to show him some attantion and love.

At night when he does this, put your book/paper down and give him a cuddle and pet him for a while and he will most likely just curl up and go to sleep with you.

Good Luck

OMG! My cat does this too. I don't know why...we just laugh at her. i wonder if they get paper cuts. My cat will do it on cardboard boxes too and then bite them and wrestle with them. Now i dont feel alone. I think it is ok, just a weird thing they do. Maybe it tastes good! hehe. I dont think my cat is lacking in the food area, she eats like a horse and lets me know when her bowl is empty. Have fun

My cat loves paper. If you leave a piece of paper out he will lay on it. He loves to chew on cardboard. If we leave a box of donuts out he will chew on the box and not touch the donuts. I asked my vet about it and he just said that the cat just likes paper and that it was nothing to worry about.

As a cat (many) owner, i know that cats along with many other animals have fetishes and idiosincracies just like we do . Let it be. it seems like you have a normal pet.-- Rat
