You will get out of martial arts what you put in to it. If you are dedicated and truly want to practice it as a way of life, it will fulfill your needs. It's like anything in life, you get in it what you put in to it. I love karate and it's a big part of my life. Good luck to you!

It depends very much on the style or school that you attend. Some are just out for money and you'll just get an empty pocketbook. I took Jeet Kun Do/Mixed Martial Arts for several years with a great instructor who was studying under Dan Inosanto and it did fulfil those criteria. I took Tae Kwon Do at a chain school before that, and it fulfilled none of those criteria.

Your best bet is to find someone that teaches Mixed Martial Arts in your area.

If you want conditioning and self defense, make sure that they spar medium to full contact because
1) Most schools that spar have well conditioned fighters and
2) Dealing with actual strikes thrown at you in the school is better for dealing with attacks in real life than just practicing them in the air for the whole class

That's what martial arts are all about. I have a brown belt in karate and had to quit because of school. I miss it soooo soooo much.

Not only will you get all the stuff listed, but you will also get really close friends who often become a second family. I recomend it to anyone.

Yes it will As any Martial Art you study will do these things, it will help you to get the muscle toning and help with the conditioning of your body.

The self Defense is just that, learning the techniques to defend yourself, you just have to train to get better. train right and you will.

The "right" state of mind your referring to is that it will teach you discipline, preservation of life that of your own life and your opponents, and focus.

So go ahead, train in the discipline you've chosen. It'll only serve to make you a more well rounded person; but you have to be open minded and receptive to what is being taught.

Basically any TRUE martial art system should satisfy all these needs you listed.

After 13yrs of training I have discovered a basic truth about martial arts. Your quality and frequency of training will far outweigh your style of training.
Do yourself a favor and find a good SCHOOL, not a good STYLE.
Never pay for a rank test and never sign a contract.

If you are starting from scratch find a good teacher first. A good teacher should be someone not out to rip off students (running a mcdojo). Who does not give you some bs answers about magical "chi" (ie: dillman), whose teaching is grounded in reality and isn't creating a "belt factory".

Kung Fu is the best for state-of-mind training, I would say that Greco-Roman wrestling, Judo, or boxing would be best for self-defense. Don't take karate.

Sounds like you should consider a career in the military.

I learned everything I know about self defense there.
