I have a '94 Nissan Pathfinder 4WD V6 XE. Am having some difficulty locating the cause of an electrical problem in my ignition circut. My starter kicks over sometimes and not at all other times. Is there anywhere I will need to look other than the Starter itself, the Ignition collar (IC)? The wiring harness is brand new, I had to replace it the last time I changed the alternator.

Here is what I have done so far, Checked wiring harness from Battery to Starter (checked good at all contacts), Checked fusible links for blown links (none blown), Checked ignition Circut for faulty fuses/conections (All good). Took the starter off and had it checked. Starter was a little rough, but not bad. It passed all tests.

Possibly a worn starter relay with crud on the contacts, or bad battery connection, or just a worn out starter depending on the age. Whatever you do, do NOT hit it with a hammer. It is probably a Permanent Magnet starter, and striking it will definitely kill it for sure by breaking the magnet shroud inside the starter case thereby rendering dead in the water where it sits. Find a qualified (ASE Certified) Automotive technician to assist you in determining the problem. If he does a good job at a reasonable cost, keep him for life.

The electrical part of the ignition switch is available separately. Try that 2nd. By now 17 year old trucklet starter can also be faulty. Get another person a long metal rod and hammer. Next time you turn the key and nothing happens Have buddy boy or girl hold the key in the crank position. Position yourself at the right fender hood open look down the valve cover and you can just barely see the top of the starter solenoid use metal rod and hammer and give the solenoid a smart tap on the gold colored metal part not the black part where the battery terminals are. Shock the starter and it cranks up there is the problem...

I'm not famillar with pathfinders but, try to trace your power sorce frome positive to ground it sould travel from the battery to the starter and the igniton will connect the circut. try to find a scamatic of the circut in a service manual. trace your circut a you will most likly find your colprit to be a loose or damaged wire if it is not a wire then its going to be a componet somewhere in that circut. First check for power (12V) at the positive connection on the starter(while trying to start). If you have power check for continuity with a ground on the negitve connection on the starter. That should get you started in the right direction.
