I stopped to talk to a cop the other day to ask him what his radar gun went up to and he replied "188mph". When I asked him why they topped out at 188mph, he replied, and I quote "because they don't make anything that will go faster than 188mph on the road."
Are cops really and truly that ignorant?

Ignorant to ask him the question? Since when am I not allowed to inquire about something I pay taxes for...you are a prime example of your fellow officer.
Little Punk?? I am a 30 year old business man..not a little punk...and for your information I asked him the question because I had a bet with a friend on what their guns went up too.
Anyone who has enough money to buy a "expensive" car knows that they are capable of much more than 188...like a vipe...corvette. Even Motorcyles are capable of 190+...please stick to the question instead of shouting out insults and proving my point further.

And so you know...I have a masters degree in business...run my own business and would most certainly qualify to be a cop. Again..leave it to a cop to bury there kind even deeper...you see it is only the cops who are making "assumptions"...I never called cops "dumb", I "asked" if they were dumb because of the one I talked too...not to mention I have several friend who are state police...most of which are not all that bright.

Actually, his answer was incorrect. The LED readout on a handheld or dashmount radar unit will register speeds up to 199 mph, but the "display check" button, which shows that all LEDs are working, shows 188 (all the LEDs light up for that number).

first of all, why would you ask such a stupid question.secondly, no, cops are not dumb.most municpalities require a police officer candidate be a 4 year college gradute, and pass a civil sevice exam with a very high score, before being hired. Thereafter, there is a rigourous12 or so weeks in a training academy, and numerous in setrvice traiinuing course that are often required A police officer needs to have a working knowledge of the penal law, vehicle and traffic law., and be pyhicallty and pshycologically fit..STILL think cops are dumb?I I doubt if you would qualify for the job, in view of the dumb question you asked///

As a civilian, I think very, very few cops are dumb. You have to be smart to do the job. BUT, they are not always right. Occasionally, while doing a preemptive stop on a civilian vehicle, an officer will not be able to obtain incriminating evidence.
I ought to know; I was stopped once because my U-Haul's back door was not secured and I was almost arrested just for becoming nervous. Cops with badge-itude are a serious problem in the police culture.

if you max out the radar gun ...it doesn't matter...you are getting a speeding ticket...if they catch you...plus anything that can exceed 188 mph the cops likely won't be able to catch anyway...but the big thing I suspect was the cop was keeping secret the abilities of their technology

I haven't met too many, but the ones I have are bright . . and for the most part .. are damn good people.. and watch out for little punks like you. Some day an officer may save your life. Then, maybe your attitude will change. Wake up !!! Good Luck ! :)

cops aren't dumb at all, they are trained to answer you in a couple of ways but a PERSON'S personality cop or no cop affects their answers to you anyway
