It is really a ethnic issue with the native Africans and the Islamic Africans, broken down further into pastoralists and herders. The UN is doing good in the region but is being stifled by the government of the Sudan, even though the African Union has already expressed they cannot perform the tasks needed to hold a peace in the Sudan. There are a lot of similarities between the attrocities in the Sudan and the breakdown of Yugoslavia after Tito's death. The differences stem from political interest in eastern Europe (where some big war was ignited) and having a Nato base in Northern Italy, amongst other things. Africa, for the most part, has always been low on the US list of national interests. We do provide the most aid money to help the Sudanese diaspora but little else. The rhetoric of ending the genocide, etc, has been going on for a while and is intensifying in the media but with little effect. The US will continue to provide aid but I doubt a military presence, even if the UN is allowed in, will be made available.

Oh... It is pronounced like it is spelled: Dar - Fur.

The government wants to get rid of the ethnic Africans so that they can free access to the oil whereas the Africans want to keep their land. To complicate matters, the Arabs are muslims whereas the Africans are animist or Christians & some American companies are drilling & pumping oil...

Genocide is occuring but its really about water. The water supply (mainly Lake Chad) is drying up. Why? Global warming. And our government isn't doing anything about the slaughter because there's no oil in Darfur.

I don't understand all of the politics, but I do know that people are suffering. And it seems like the rest of the world is just going to stand back and watch, which is shameful!
