you need an employer to sponsor you for a work permit. Your employer needs to go here:
http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/

and

http://www.workingintheuk.gov.uk/working_in_the_uk/en/homepage/work_permits0.html?

You can't apply direct. Your future employer MUST do this after all documentation has been passed to them, this includes your Visa and passport the employer will then get them verified by the work permits uk office. i suggest you contact a jobcentre for more info on this.

You will probably need to get a work permit too, that is the hard part! Plus you cannot switch from visitor to worker without applying for a visa in your home country - you cannot switch visas in country anymore.

You cannot make an application yourself. An employer must be willing to sponsor you to work for him. The work permit will be sent to him directly and not to you.

You cannot switch jobs either, and you cannot work part time for someone else either.

After 5 years, you will be granted Permanent residence.
