when they respond well to rewards
when they can tell you they need to go (or do the *pee pee dance* lol)

20 months is very young to start potty training. He'll start showing an interest probably within a year, though. Studies have shown that you can start potty training a child at 2 and it'll take a year and a half, or your can start at 3 and it'll take 6 months. Either way, 3-1/2 seems to be about the right age, so it depends on how long you want to spend on the process. Note: everyoned develops at a different rate. I'm just talking about averages here. The point is, they learn when they're ready. And you almost never see 10-year-olds in diapers.

My son was about 20 months old when I started potty training him. He did not show any interest but I was tired of the diapers. I would just take him into the bathroom at least once an hour and set him on his little training seat. I would sit down on the big toilet and go pee. Once he heard the noise he would start laughing. This made him want to make the noise as well. And when he did we would yell "yeah" and clap. Nothing too big but just a little celebration. This made him want to make the noise in the toilet more often. Before you know it he will be potty trained.

I get sooo sick of people telling others how to raise their children...HE will when HE'S ready!!! If he is showing no interest..then don't force the issue...have a potty chair in the bathroom and both you and dad need to have him sit (either with or without diaper on) and show him what it's all about...He will eventually see that going potty is something HE can do himself...We did a sticker reward system...and it worked...for our now 5 yr old...our 2.5 yr old...only goes when HE wants..he will eventually HATE being in a wet or dirty diaper...it's a waiting game...He'll drive YOU nuts before he will be trained...but he will be...just look at dad...He's not wearing a pull up..LOL

Don't force it...if he is not ready, he is not ready! All you will do is frustrate yourself and him. You will be able to sense when he is ready...he will give you signs. Do not worry about it, just go with the flow-so to speak. I would try to prompt him periodically but again...do not force it...he is a normal boy baby. All kids are different and basically potty train at their own pace. I do not believe that there is any evidence that early potty training means that the child is any more intelligent than late bloomers.
Best of luck but do not fret about it...they grow up too fast the way it is!!

20 months is WAY too early, especially with a boy!! I wouldn't expect him to even show any interest until he's at least 3. Both my sons weren't trained until they were 3 and a half and my friend is currently having the struggle with her 3 year old, who has NO interest in pooping in the potty. Boys are just slower to potty train than girls. It's normal. Don't sweat it.

I would say around 2 1/2 is a good time to start thinking about this. They have to have some verbal skills to be able to tell you what they need and when. Start using the cotton training pants and he will get the idea when he gets wet. The disposable type are a waste of money.

he will ask you...say the word potty...etc. He is still kind of little and personally I think it's easier to train during the summer, that way they can run around 1/2 naked and not have to worry about pants / then the diaper (shirts / socks...etc, if you have one of those kids)...I actually babysat for a kid who had to be completely naked when he went to the bathroom...it was definitely different.
