It's not so much that they will choke them. I believe the problem is that chicken bones tend to will splinter and stick in their throat.

Sure are a lot of personal opinions in this thread with very little information of any value.

There are several things that need to be taken into consideration.
There is a difference between cooked bones and raw bones.
If a dog is on a "BARF" diet it may well be eating chicken bones on a regular bases, but this is in no way the same as eating a chicken bone off of a dinner plate.
Pork bones are just as bad as chicken bones.
Most beef bones are perfectly safe.

The most common problem with bones, is getting stuck in the throat, or across the roof of the mouth..so all dogs should be watched when given a bone..

Dogs can choke on any bones, however, the ones that may do internal damage are cooked bones. Most medium to large dogs can handle raw bones fine..When bones are cooked, it changes them, so that they can splinter, which can be hazardous..but if raw, they break into chunks, and digest..> http://www.pet-grub.com/pet-health/dentistry.pets << read 4th paragraph...

You can try it yourself..De-bone chicken or any meat, and try to break the bone while raw..Cook a bone, and break it. It breaks totally different...
However, a friend, who breeds the top dogs in USA of the breed that I raise..tossed a bone into the kennel and broke her dog's toe! So, I guess any bone can be dangerous!!

All bones are potentially dangerous for dogs. It's not so much choking hazards as the danger of the bones splintering in the digestive tract and perforating the bowel. That is the common danger. Raw beef brisket and big raw beef shank bones are the only ones marginally safe, but why take a chance? Cooked bones are the most dangerous because they splinter easily.

No bones about it.

Hope that helps! :)

All bones are bad because they splinter off inside.I had a dog,,a beautiful malamute,,that the neighbors would throw chicken bones too,,she died from having her trake punctured,,went thru sergery that the vet botched. Anyhow,,bones can cause much damage to the intestinal tract also & stomach etc.soup bones dont splinter but can wear down a dogs teeth. Please use raw hide chewies if the dog isnt really old.So true too about bones can become obstructions. That is very serious surgery.

I suppose a dog could choke on anything, but chicken bones are especially dangerous because they're small and soft. We've always given our dogs beef bones with no problems. As long as they're big bones with no small pieces sticking out, then it's probably fine.

your husband is right. Chicken bones split and shatter length wise and the dog can and ususlly does get the bone stuck in their throat. It is like trying to swallow a needle.
The beef bones do not do this and the dog can get a small chunk and chew that up to smaller bites.
Sometimes the chicken bone is just an obstruction that will not allow the dog to swallow much food and the dog will slowly starve to death. Once it is stuck it has to be surgically removed.

Chicken bones as well as any small bones will get caught in a dogs throat and choke it. Also chicken bones will splinter and cut a dogs throat!

Chicken bones are more brittle than cow or pig bones. The danger in giving them to a dog is in the sharp shards that the chicken bone splits into. There is however danger in giving a dog anything that they can swallow that isn't easily broken down (bones, small rubber toys, even rawhide).

Those who feed raw diets explain that chicken bones, when fed RAW only, are safe. Cooked chicken bones are definitely bad for dogs as they will splinter and may perforate the esophagus, stomach or intestines. I have fed raw chicken bones without a problem, but I am sure that my vet might say that I was just lucky.
