6 answers

x=6
y=2

First solve the first equation for y, to do so you subtract x from both sides so you are left with:

y=8-x

Next you plug in y=8-x for the y in the second problem so you have:

x-3(8-x)=0

Distribute the -3

x-24+3x=0

add 24 to both sides

x+3x=24

add the x's

4x=24

divide by 4 and you find that x=6

Next you plug in x=6 into one of the equations and solve for y.

6+y=8

subtract 6 from both sides

y=2

equation 1 = x+y =8 ------- y = 8 - x
equation 2= 2 = x-3y=0
it just rearranged the equation hope you understand
put equation 1 into equation 2like this *( this method is called Substitution )
x- 3(8-x) = 0
x- 24 +3x =0
-2x =24 + 0 - take like terms
4x =24
x= 6
there if x= 6 then put in into equation1
which is
x + y=8 or y = 8-x
y = 8 - 6
y= 2
there fore the solution to the question is x= 6 and y = 2
you can check by pluging it into the equation .

From the second equation: x = 3y

Plug that into the first equation:
3y + y = 8
4y = 8
y = 2

... and since x=3y, x=6.

Answer: x=6, y=2.

substitute x = 8 - y into the second equation

8 - y - 3y = 0
8 - 4y = 0
4y = 8
y = 2

then substitute y to find x

x + 2 = 8
x = 6

2006-09-25 09:34:12 · answer #5 · answered by JuJu 3 · 0 0

x+y = 8
x -3y = 0
therefore
x = 3y
so replace x in the original equation with 3y
3y + y = 8
in other words
4 y = 8
y = 2
x = 6
