My fiance and I will be living in DC -- most likely Columbia Heights. She will be driving to Gaithersburg (NIST) and we would like to know what the expected traffic for a reverse commute would be. Suggestions for back roads to get to 270 are also very helpful. Thanks!

She will be driving from DC to Gaithersburg in the morning, and from Gaithersburg to DC in the evening. We live in California, and testing the roads just isn't an option. It seems like it could take anywhere from 40 minutes to 2 hours, and it will be a major factor in deciding where to live.

Light traffic back roads from DC to 270 would be helpful. Thanks!

Man - you're still going to deal with traffic on the back roads of Montgomery County. There's no decent way to get to NIST without sitting in traffic for some length of time - especially when leaving DC from Columbia Heights. You could take 16th St. to MD 97 to I-495 for two exits (495 usually flows well from 97 to where 270 merges on the other side). Once on I-270, life should be good. For the trip back - Take MD 355 to MD 28 in Rockville to MD 97 South to return to Columbia Heights.

Let me recommend an apartment complex located about 10-15 minutes from NIST in downtown Gaithersburg.

you are going to run into TERRIBLE traffic on 270, theres no way around it. my advice to you is to simply pick a different place to live, where you wont have to travel that route. its very hectic, impractical, and its constantly changing. id pick a place on the other side of gaithersburg, up maryland via pennsylvania way. then you can just take 15 to get to dc, and find an off road to get to gaithersburg.

and not making use of a automobile, you're reliant on public transportation. The Camden Line MARC practice is sluggish yet living in college Park provides get right of entry to to Metro's eco-friendly Line. The Penn Line MARC is a lot speedier and the halfway station is seen to be Odenton different than that there are not any residences or advancements interior sight. There are extra public transit thoughts going into BWI Airport Station. hall Transit has some bus routes that manage Penn Line and Camden Line MARC Stations. {EDIT} for sure, you could arise with the money for to stay in Georgetown and you probable like living in Georgetown so why would you want to pass someplace else?

270 sucks unless you catch it at the right time. However, she will benefit from going the opposite way of the majority of traffic each way.

I don't know any of the back roads on that side of the beltway sorry.

The commute won't be good no matter what you do.
