All those answer are great and true, but have you thought about the fact that both of these kids are of different character and temperament? I have a son who is 7 and loves to cuddle and hug and kiss. I also have a daughter who's 13 who never was much of an affectionate kid. She's slowly letting down her (?) defenses, but both of my kids are SO different.

yes... the two and a half year old is exploring and adventuring. but he should get back to hugging and kissing..soon. then when they start being around other children in school... some do not want the kids to see them kiss mommie..this happens at various times.. boys usually. and finally teen years... some do not want you at the mall at the same time they are. children are funny.. but a joy. see what you have to look forward to.? also remember the two boys will probably end up totally different. i had one lovey all his life.. and one that was affectionate off and on. now they are young men that make me very proud. and are both affectionate..caring and considerate.

It's liable to come back soon....my son went through a similar phase at about that age, but I still get to smooch on him now (he just turned four).
I informed him, "If you're not gonna GIVE me a kiss, then I'm gonna TAKE a kiss!" (There's usually much tickling and wrestling around involved with the taking, as well...) And he knows that giving Mama and Daddy a kiss and hug is just part of the "saying goodbye" ritual, so he usually follows along....
Fight for your right to smooches!

I was talking to a friend who is a mother with a 22 yeard old son, a 16 year old daughter and a 2 year old son.
The 22 year old always showed affection to his mum, the daughter never did. And she is over joyed that her little 2 year accident is a huggy and kissy kid.
My 10 year old still hugs me when he gets home from school, or gives me a kiss on the forehead if i am in bed before him.
Whilst my 6 year old will sit on my lap, but only if it is to reach something.

It comes back, even thought it felt like I waited forever. I have 17 year old twin boys who kiss me goodnight and tell me they love me. And they are both always willing to give me a hug when they think I need it, even when I don't realize its what I need. They even do this in front of their friends and girlfriends, which makes it even more wonderful since they aren't afraid to show their friends that they love their mom!

My boys are 22, 21 and 16. The younger two were always affectionate and still are. The oldest one is affectionate, but not as freely as the other two, and this is how he was when he was young, also.

It will come back more as children learn empathy and value of mom. Although the innocent blind love of an infant is truely unique to their age.
At some point your babies will both be independant teenagers. So long as you instill in them the value of affection, and expect it from them without demanding something unheartfelt, they will always remember to pay respects to mom.

kids will be effectionate, depending on their nature, until about 10 or so, at least while they are at home, with no friends around...they don't become effectionate again till they have past the teenage years and possible have children of their own. I still kiss my mom and tell her I love her.
