My fiance and I are having an outdoor wedding August 2007 in Marion, IA (near Cedar Rapids, Linn County). We are looking for someone to officiate and legally bind our wedding. We are agnostic, and are seeking someone who can make this special
but will not try to change our ways. Specific names or specific places to look is highly appreciated.

Probate judges can marry people. Call your local courthouse.

You could look into the Universal Life Church - they ordain anyone online. It might sound a bit cheesy, but then you have more freedom in who performs the ceremony. (ie. you can have a friend or family member do it.)

One of the tenets of the Universal Life Church is that they are completely non-denominational. I have some friends who were married by a friend of theirs last year - someone they wanted to be involved, but not in the wedding party.

Just make sure you find out about the regulations for someone performing ceremonies in your state - there may be some hoops to jump through to make sure that your person is actually legally certified. Keep in mind that it may take a while (a couple of weeks at least) to get them certified to perform a legal ceremony in Iowa - you've got time to get it all sorted out, though. (UCL also maintains a list of people on their website, searchable by area.)

Congratulations, and good luck!

Don't have any specific names, but if you do a search for "secular wedding officiant" on Google, you should be able to find someone.

If nothing else, check with the local Universal Unitarian church (even though they're spiritual, they should be able to respect your request for a secular wedding), or look for a Secular Humanist organization in your area.

Good luck!!

My husband and I didn't want a religious ceremony either. We had a civil ceremony with no problem whatsoever. Just ask the local courthouse where you can find someone who can perform a "civil ceremony". Good luck and congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

If there is a Universal Unitarian church near you, they would e more then happy to do your ceremony however you like. I know we have one in Des Moines, and one in Ames. Check the phonebook!
