At the moment there are a couple of problems in the GA area. The ones that most GA pilots are concerned about at the moment are fuel, and government regulations.
The fuel is a big problem, because aviation piston engines use 100LL fuel, which contains led. normal sutomotive fuel in a normal aircraft engine would result in serious problems. Envitomental agensies are fighting the production of 100LL, and if they succeed before engine manoufacturers develop a new engine that does not work on 100LL, it would be a disaster.
Also, the gouvernment is planning on cutting funds for GA airports, which will lead to the closing of many of them, and leaving many pilots without a place near home to fly.

Out of date systems are very common in the aviation field. The problem there is the lack of regulations on inspections. Security is a big issue lately. Type in a search of Deregulation of airlines and airports. I did a research paper a year ago on that and found alot of good info. Birds in the engine are less likely than terrorist hyjackings though.

Hands down, the biggest problem in G.A. is the pay is absolutely horrible for A&P mechanics. Everyone migrates to Corporate Jets because of it. You will find that A.S.E and factory trained automobile technicians make more money than A&Ps do. As a result, all of the skilled G.A. wrenches migrate into Corporate Jets. Even then on an average in corporate you make $23 to $25 an hour. It's crazy! These guys get low dollar and sign thier life away for the work they do.

Try the encroachment of general aviation airfields by housing. Another is the impending demise of general aviation due to lawsuits and the decreasing popularity of flying as a sport or hobby.
