My fiance and I are trying to get our debt paid off to get married and have kids. He has a lake boat and I have an expensive car. He wants me to trade the car in on a cheaper one to lower payments, but I said I would only do that if he did something in return such as sell his boat that he still owes alot on. He won't do that. What does this mean. I feel that it's fair, I give up my toy, he gives up his, but he doesn't feel that way. What do you think??

I plan on getting another boat once we are financially secure, but he's not willing to give this one up for the time being for a better one later even though he hasn't used it for 3 years.

it is fair...a car, at least you can use that everyday....and it serves a purpose regardless of how fancy it is, a boat is a fricken toy all the way around unless you live on the last florida key....maybe if you trade your car in for something not so sporty, he should have to trade his lake boat (I'm assuming it has a cabin and kitchenette?) in for a smaller fishing boat? Why does he feel he should keep his boat? Have you asked him that? Is getting married and having children more important to him than his lake boat? doesn't sound like it...baby fiance is acting like a spoiled brat

It depends, is he making payments on his boat? Never mess with a man and his boat. To some men, a boat is a great accomplishment, not just by having a boat, but taking the family out in it, going fishing. A boat is more a state of mind than a toy. If you guys are going to play the "if you will then I will" game, you will get nowhere. You need to understand each other's desires. Why do you want to keep that particular car? Let him know why and ask the same of him. Maybe try to focus on something else he can eliminate to cut costs. Believe me, after you guys have kids, you will wish you had that boat!!!!

get rid of all unnecsseary debt no matter who's it is.This is the beginnig of major problems debt will ruin a good marriage, let all unneeded debt go.find a cheap car that you can pay of quick and get rid of the house boat then save money and have some money where you can use it for those things and not have to pay a ton of interest it isn't about who's it is .It isDEBT and thatis the wrong foot to start off on.

i think ur right.. u both should make sacrifices.. don't get married w/debt.. try to get rid of as much debt as u can before getting married.. finance trouble is in the top 5 reasons why people get divorced..

if he won't compromise now just imagine what it'll be like when u get married..

can he trade his boat in for a less expensive one as well? If he can and refuses...I wouldn't budge on the car issue either.
