Every nation which is developed or has developed has one thing in common. The common citizen of that country takes pride to say he is from that country. He wears its flag. Wants its country to grow in might both industrial and military.
In India people wear American flag. People are so corrupt that roads with 100 year gurantee gets torn appart in 5 months. Even out side Taj Mahal where so many foreigners come has brocken roads central channel, no water and beggars roaming all around.
The people have no self pride eg.
police men are found taking bribes from truck drivers oppenly, every govt dept is corrupt top to bottom,
people keep their streets dirty,
Piss every where,
Throw garbage every where,
A sense that our country should be best is missing,
etc etc.

It is a good question for every Indian to ponder over. Ours is a country as old as China. But certainly the same comments can not be made against China. Why? This is the crux of the question. It is neither to denigrade India nor to eulogise USA. One should analyse what has been stated is a fact or not. It is not just the question of policeman taking bribes, whether there is rampant corruption every where or not. If there is no development, no good roads or proper health services or floods every year, there has to be a reason. Can this reason be scientifically analysed and if possible, remedied.
It is easier to analyse the reasons. Unlike India, China has never been a slave country. China's resources or wealth has never been drained or looted the way India's wealth was. India got independence after paying a great price by way of partition and its initial rulers like Nehru and Gandhi did not have the vision or the foresight of Washington or Jefferson, which made us agree to the partitioning of the country without exchange of population (afterall why was partition demanded at all). The country is still paying the heavy price in terms of periodic bomb blasts. But the rulers and their progeny are well protected and ever safe and enjoying the fruits of all development and power, while the masses are paying the price in terms of lop-sided development or Kashmir problem, which could have been solved in 1948 itself without going to the UNO.
The moot point is whether we as a nation are willing to analyse the reasons honestly and prepared to take corrective steps. Unfortunately, some steps can not be reversed, like one man one vote or the case for reservations. China developed without these so called ornaments of democracy. Ours will therefore take a long time.to reach anywhere near China. The scientist George Gamov has once said, if a monkey is taught typing, and if he is given a type-writer and infinite supply of paper,it is possible he may type out a few pages from Shakespere, but it should not be expected that the entire works of the famed dramatist will be reproduced even after infinite time. Similarly India will also develop, will keep begging the US for nuclear power, while its youth will keep craving for coming to USA for jobs and still keep criticising USA and its culture.

India is a developing country. It has other issues to tackle then showing pride. Its one of the most historic countries in the world and has a whole civilisation behind it.With a burgeoning population nearing china the things your mentioning like crimes, begging, corruption are common.India is growing from the shadows of all this and every indian is proud of his/her nation .Its the only country with such multicultural diversity and ethic community living in peace. You dont have a country with such immense demographics.Americans are known to be in high-profile corruption among bureaucratics for your record. So, these corruptions are not seen in america as its high above average citizens head. Its human instinct that with such a huge population such things are characteristic of any country.India is going to be the hub of many an activity in future dont worry and Indians are more proud then any other country's citizens !!!

India has just had over 50 years of independence and the amount of progress we've made is commendable. Im an Indian and I vouch that us Indians have a lot to be proud of.

**The following is in response to begoner's remark:

Although India has certainly modernised to the level of most western countries we still take pride in our customs, traditions and values. We do not lack faith and dont need "something to beleive in" like most clueless americans do. We are aware that there is a world outside are our contry and are curious to explore it. Unlike an average american who thinks that america is the universe. Students dont go around shooting in schools here, children dont go around murdering their parents here and an average Indian is far less frustrated or neurotic than an average american.

U call urself nationalistic? Whereas half of ur country beleives that it was ur government and ur president who caused 9/11. How can u be called nationalistic when u guys try to seek out conspiracies and cover ups in some of the most tragic incidents that US has faced is beyond my comprehension?

Just b'coz Iwe ndians dont go around blowing our own trumpet, pls dont presume that we arent proud of our nation. We have had a lot of "firsts" and u better be prepared for more in the future too.

(sorry for my bitchy response but i hate judgemental people commenting on stuff they have no clue/information about)

----For the person who asked this question:

1. Did you know that our constitution prohibited putting our flag up in our homes or wearing it on our clothes for a very long time. This was b'coz it was considered disrespectful and this is why people still hesitate to wear it.

2. Yes a lot of youngsters wear flags of other countries but I think it just goes to show how accepting Indians are of other cultures around the world.

3. Yes our roads are bad but wont u say that they are definitely better than they were 10 years ago?

4. Yes we may not be fanatics like many other countries but that doesnt mean that we are devoid of pride for our nation.

5.Its not like there are no hungry, illiterate, poor, homeless, unemployed people in the US. Its not like people in the US dont fight over religion. Its not like there is no racism in the US. Its not like people dont take bribes in US. Its not like people dont commit adultery in US (have u forgotten bill clinton?)

Has a black or a woman ever become a president in the US? No! India has had a muslim president and a woman prime minister ages ago. Isnt that something we should take pride in?

My point is that there always are issues, drawbacks and minuses in every country. Every country has good people and bad people in it. Every country has immoral traitors as its citizen as well as moral, law abiding and proud citizens residing in it.

Yes, we are not perfect but compared to what we were 10 years ago, we definitely have moved forward. And as long as we keep moving forward without getting complacent we surely will keep bettering our country.

Yes, ur right when u say that a sense that our country shoul be best is missing in many ... but we've a choice. We can either see this as a limitation or we can see this as an oppotunity to make our country the best...

----For my fellow Indians:

I agree that we do have our drawbacks and limitations but instead of criticising those its up to you and i to correct them.

Every little step we take will become a leap in the years to come

i am indian & i have pride.....India is rising and predicted to become the strongest country (or whatever it is ) like America is now. But i do think you are slightly right. Indians dont like to talk in crowds or express themseleves but we are proud to be Indian....or at least the rest of my family is. If i was afraid to admit i was indian i would have never answered this question. India is waaaaaay smarter than americans and i think i have my case clear. I am not saying you are racist but many Indians are proud to be Indian.

No, very few countries are so insanely nationalistic as the US. India is not faring very well economically for the most part -- why should they be so proud of their country? It's not like they chose to be born there. A better question is why USans have so much pride in their country.

When a country allows third world denziens to stream into their country in an unrestricted manner, what do you expect? Hopefully their kids will feel different.

How do you know this for sure? Do you go to India and observe everyone on a daily basis? I doubt it so you cannot spew such nonsense.

It has something to do with the fact that many Indians are nearly starving to death while cows wander the fu$#ing streets! I dunno what the root cause is, but it is a shame.
