You must understand that most, if not all, facts take a certain amount of faith. One cannot prove any fact or fiction with certainty, there will always be room for doubt. You must also understand that "fact" is usually dictated by humans (finite beings), and most of the time there is room for error.

The better question is, Why do people confuse faith and credulity?
"Faith is the assured expectation of things hoped for, the evident demonstration of realities though not beheld."
God exists. That is a fact that can evidenced from several points of view by those whose minds are not closed.
He has made promises that have not yet been fulfilled. Faith is the very strong belief, the assured expectation, that although his promises, the things hoped for, have not yet been fulfilled, he will keep his promises because he always has in the past.
The wrong view of the physical universe was because people went beyond what was written. That belief mentioned above is not in the Bible.

You forgot to mention that facts have been changing as knowledge progresses since people have been claiming religion. How can you base an ultimate on a fact that will change? Take the throry of relativity, for example. Cool when it was presented by Einstein, but different now. Faith is based on something that can't be explained but has to be experienced. That's why so many people can't comprehend it, because of lack of experience.

Everybody has faith, whether they are believers or not. Following are common examples of faith:
1. When you drive your car on a bridge, you have faith the bridge will not collapse and you lose your life. (Fact: bridges have collapsed when in use, and people have lost their lives)
2. When you show up for work tomorrow morning, you have faith you will still be employed. (Fact: many people are losing their jobs due to downsizing, outsourcing, etc.)
3. When you get ready to go home from your job and tell everyone, "see ya tomorrow", you have faith you will be alive. (Fact: thousands of people have died today)
Conclusion: your assumption that faith=unprovable is not valid!

an excellent observation. as to why? i think it boils down to fear. fear of the unknown, fear of death, fear of one another. ironic, isn't it? the bible says perfect love drives out fear; atheism says there is nothing to fear, yet atheists as a rule cannot tolerate the opposite viewpoint. as you say, both viewpoints are a matter of faith, since neither can be "proven" emphatically. i think that those on either side who recognize this fact are able to view the universe less critically, while those who hold dogmatically to their own certainty cause most of the confusion - it is impossible to open a dialogue with "believers" of either stripe. they already have all the answers...
mystery makes faith possible.

Faith means trust-and the universe is an evidence of a God of order-as you trust this one-His presence in your life is provable-life changing in the most wonderfull way-being born again-it happened to me as an agnostic Jew-now Jesus is my savior and best friend too.
once the scientists said the earth was flat-but the bible says God made it a sphere. Bible believers were laughed at till its proven true-other books come and go-outdated in 10 years-the bible stands infalable after thousands of years.- thanks david in Jesus amazing grace

That's right. It's only provable by demonstration.
It's a fact I have faith in God. It is a fact I have faith in science. When I see a discrepancy, I have faith in God.

Faith (wishful, magical thinking) is a substitute for evidence... and serves as the basis for 'belief'... the internalized certainty that one's own ideations map to reality.
'Belief' is a substitute for knowledge... i.e., false knowledge, sustained by wishful, magical thinking.
faith + belief = willful ignorance and self-delusion
