I am currently doing a project for school and I need to find out the crime rate for loyola university in 2003 and 2004. I know that the crime has went down within that one year but I need to know why. I am talking about the Loyola campus located at 820 N. Michigan Ave. in Chicago,IL. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Here's the advice I have.

I used to work in campus security, so that, combined with having a educational background in law enforcement, helped me know where to look to answer this question.

First of all, you need to find out if Loyola University has a campus police department. After finding the college and doing a few searches, it appears that it does. (http://luc.edu/depts/safety/staff1.html)

Because it has a police department, it would be logical to assume that department must make a specific report to the US Federal Government - the Uniform Crime Report. "The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program was conceived in 1929 by the International Association of Chiefs of Police to meet a need for reliable, uniform crime statistics for the nation" (from http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm). It is my understanding that every year, each police department must report the total number of specific types of crimes it has had each month to the FBI; included in that must be offender and victim information.

Furthermore, I believe that each department must make that information avaliable to the public. This is often done through the department's web site, but may also be done through direct request to the department.

My advice for you. Email one of the fine employees of the Loyola University's Campus Police Department, and request a copy of the Uniform Crime Report for the years you are interested in. They are most likely to be helpful with your quest for information, especially if you explain the research is for a college class.

Try this site below. It seems to have a lot of statistics about Cook County. These figures are for 2003/2004, but if you click on a specific area, you will see it broken down by offenses. It may also have some link to get even more current data, but I'm not sure (you'll have to check for yourself on that). Hope this is some help.
