I have a dane who has pretty bad breath as well. The first thing I did was go to the Vet because bad breath can be a sign of gum disease. Since he does not naturally keep the tartar and build down by chewing on bones and such I have to take him to get his teeth cleaned 1-2 times a year. That might be something you consider. But in the mean time I would definitely start brushing his or her teeth several times a week. It really does help with bad breath. I use "Denta Clean" for dogs. I buy it at petsmart. I has a light mint flavor and smell. You might try it a couple of times a week and see. It should help with the smell and keep your dog's teeth healthy.

Humans have to use a mouth wash for oral hygiene why not dogs? How about buying a tooth brush with some Crest toothpaste and some Scope and
give your Dog's mouth a serious cleaning ??? I know it sounds like
easier said than done but it would give your doggie a
fresher smelling breath and also probably help eliminate bacteria at the same time. If this doesn't work, try giving him/her chocolate breath mints,he/she will like the sweet taste of chocolate and the mint will freshen
your doggie's breath.

Do NOT use human toothpaste or mouthwash in dogs!!! It is not designed to be swallowed, and since they don't understand the 'rinse and spit' thing, it can make them VERY ill. Chocolate breath mints?! Another good way to make your dog ill. Throw that magazine away and find a new veterinarian....or pay closer attention, as I seriously doubt that's what you were told.

To the asker: schedule a checkup with your veterinarian. It could be dental disease, liver disease, kidney disease, anal-sac problems, food allergies, etc. etc. etc. As you no doubt know, Great Danes age at a much more rapid rate than smaller breeds, and are prone to geriatric disorders at surprisingly 'young' ages. Do not change the food until talking to your veterinarian.

I agree that premium foods often help, but Nutro in particular is NOT a premium food, btw....I don't care how much they try to 'pretend' to be. It contains much more non-nutritive filler than they will lead you to believe. They do that by breaking down those things into individual components, so they don't have to list them at the top of the ingredient list. It's a deceptive labelling trick, but it's legal. Science Diet and Iams don't play those kind of games. (I have no financial interest in any dog food company....I'm just telling you that Nutro causes many medical issues that other foods don't.)

Try some dog tooth paste. I do that for my cats-- brush their teeth that is. While their breath is not bad afterwords- the toothpaste is chicken flavor which you'd think would leave their breath smelling bad but it doesn't!
Try a local pet store- they may have the type of brushes that you can slip over your finger and your dog will be none the wiser.
Hope this helps and have a great day!!!

He could have teeth problems. You should get him at least checked out. If he turns out to be fine there is a kind of mouthwash you can by for your dog from your vet. You just pour a certain amount into his water everyday and it gives him really good minty smelling breath and will also help with gengivites.

Here are a few things to freshen up his/her breath

1. A premium quality dog food (Nutro, Science Diet, Authority, Buffalo Blue, etc)
2. Brushing his/her teeth with special dog toothpaste and tooth brush.
3. Special breath freshening treats like Breath Busters and Dentabones.
4. Breath freshening and teeth cleaning toys like Fresh N' Floss (rope toy), Tuff Mint Tennis Balls, and Booda Velvet bones.

You will need to make sure your dog doesn't have any infected teeth or any infected areas in his mouth. He may have an abcess somewhere. If not, I suggest a good tooth scaling at the vets. You also should give him lots of chew toys (Large enough so he cannot swallow them) and feed a hard dog cookie or hard kibble.
I hope this helps.

A change of food, perhaps? Have you tried milkbones in addition to the other bones? Perhaps even a dental treatment will help.

Good luck!

Its diet. All it needs is a premium dried food (served by portion control twice a day ) and a feed of raw bones. Get rid of that canned garbage, prepared foods contain laxatives
