I agree with the other answerers. You don't mention how far you are currently running (which sort of is important), but you did the right thing in preparing well in advance.

I recommend slowing your pace down a little bit more when you are going longer. Burning extra energy will only make the last couple of miles be agony for you.

In addition, slowly work your way up. Assuming you can run 1 mile today (and need to get to 5 in 8 weeks), once or twice a week add on additional half mile to your normal run. Continue to work out at your 1 mile route the other 1 - 2 times a week (assuming you run about 4 times a week).

As time goes by, increase your 1 mile route slightly more, so that your total volume of mileage goes up as well as your long run. The more miles you can run in a week, the more your fitness / endurance levels should go up. By the end of the 8 weeks, you should be able to handle the extra 4 miles (it gets easier the more miles you do as your fitness levels will increase).

Be sure that you are giving yourself adequate rest / nurtrition between work outs as well.

Good luck and feel free to drop me a line if you have further questions.

Amp up your routine in small amounts. If you have eight weeks, figure out how much you would need to increase your routine every two days over the next six weeks to equal 4 new miles. Save the last two weeks for getting your body used to the new miles and the last 3 days of those two weeks hydrating and generally resting

Don't laugh...but try to run and extra half mile each week.

Are you running a race? If so, you will find that the other runners around you will help push you along. People that run marathons do not run 26 miles every day. Their longest run is aroun 18-20 miles.

Email me with questions. I love running!
