With Win2000 you dont need drivers for everything like win98.
There isnt a great deal of difference. The main difference is that XP is a very heavy program compared to win2000.
I have an old pentium3 500mhz with 192Mb ram (max it will support)..this computer will grind to a halt with XP but is smooth & responsive with the lighter win2000.
I do have another computer with XP & to be honest I think I would score them both the same. All I would say is, like for like on the same spec computer Win2000 should run faster than the "heavier" XP

win 2000 like win millenium was based around the old win 98 GUI which meant it still relied a little too heavily on DOS running in the background and needed drivers installing for everything. XP has everything including digital signatures and a much better security system. XP is also fully plug and play whereas win 2000 was more plug and pray.

Go for XP any time.

to the best of my knowledge, i think that windows 2000 is built around windows 98 technology, where as xp is built on windows nt technology, if i had to choose between the 2 id go for windows xp, windows 2000 is old hat now.

XP is better with plug and play, better with wireless, and has a built in firewall. I would also assume that 2000 has more security vulnerabilities than XP. XP is also much better with multimedia.

XP has a much better GUI, looks a lot better then 2000. It supports PnP. More stable, more programs are compatible with XP than with 2000.

Have a look at this forum site, it might be helpfull:

XP has plug and play facilities - 2000 doesn't - therefore you will need drivers for everything - a real pain. Go XP every time.
