I was recently diagnosed as Bi-Polar Type 2, I was thinking I was just depressed, I"m a 20something:) female.I have done a lot of research, it does seem to be common in my group, but it is not necessarily "common" in any one group. It can affect anyone, at almost any age, or race. It does seem to be hereditary, however.

Most severe mental illnesses are common among those that were abused as children, with the abuse starting around the age of 6 years of age, give or take a year. If you want to prevent a large percentage of mental illness, then find a way to prevent child abuse. My idea is to require martial arts to be taught in gym classes. Abusers get real unhappy when they hear that their kids are going to have karate lessons.

i am bipolar so i can tell you it is not especially common in certain groups it is a chemical imbalance in you brain that you are born wtih and it can be conrolled by medication you can and do live a nromal life no one has to know you have it or will know unless you tell them and it is hereditary meaning it is passed from generation to generation that does not mean it affects every person in that family it just means they carry the gene something traumatic usually has to happen to bring this illness out not always but most of the time but it does not affect certain groups more than others it is a chemical imbalance that can affect anyone regardless who and or what origin you are okay i hope that answers your question

There is no group in particular. My stepson had it no childhood abuse, no genetic of it, he was always taking things to the extreme. He was a very intelligent boy and man. It usually appears in late teen or early twenties. My foster son has also be diagnosed with it at a early age. Please if you or you know someone with this condition be there for them. Make sure they say on their meds and talk with a therapist often. Support them and love them give them a great deal of understanding. And if it is not you then make sure you understand this disorder, it is a hard one to deal with and live with. God bless you.

Its genetics and hereditary. I have Bi-Polar myself and my son was diagnosed with it. It does not only occur in people who have been in a abusive home or have a substance abuse problem.I can say that because my son has never been abused or had a drug problem.Hes 8. Was first diagnosed with ADHD and now has turned into Bi-Polar.
