SO to me this is an indication that there ARE other God's however God wants Christians to hold him the highest among the Gods. He did not say, "I am the Lord thy God, there are no other gods." Is this an idication that mythology might have something to it, numerous Gods with God being the supreme being?

Isn't it funny how when you point out something as obvious as this all the words 'mean something different" or "were translated to mean" or ...in those times, it was blah blah blah - yet other times when it suits their need then the text is to be taken exactly as written, no devieation, no way no how!? How convienant it is that the word of God can mean anything a reader wants it to mean, makes it easy for the Christains!!

You have to look to the original language for that. The meaning of the Hebrew and Aramaic terms.

Think about the fact that people worshipped the sun, the moon, the stars, beetles, cats, dogs, cows.

Do you really think any of those things are gods?

With myths and legends, yes, I believe at the core of them there may have been a real person. But the myths and legends I think you mean are not so old. Such as the old Norse gods. Fascinating stuff. But not so old as to have had a hand in creation.

This commandment was given to the children of Israel just after leaving Egypt after having been there for a couple hundred years. In Egypt, many different deities were worshiped, including Pharaoh, who was thought to be a god. So God told the children of Israel that they were not to worship other gods (cause they had just come from a land where they did) and were to worship him only. However, that doesn't mean that all of the other gods are real. They were just worshiped. That is why God telling Moses to tell them that "I am" sent him, because he is the only God who can say "I am" or "I exist", the others are from the imaginations of men.

The verse you are quoting actually says
"I am the LORD thy God," or as "Young's" translation reads

"2 I [am] Jehovah thy God,
3`Thou hast no other Gods before Me.

In the bible there are many who are called gods.

1 Cor 8:5

5For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords,

6yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him;

John 17:3 The only true God,

Mythology comes from stories of events prior to the flood. Genesis 6:4

AMANDA B IS HOT!

Okay Tab, picture the guy who is communicating what God said. He's going up against a lot right? Thousands of years of polytheistic worship right?

Well this guy is probably thinking, "I can't just tell everybody that there idiots, and that they've been idiots for thousands of years. That's not going to fly".

So instead, he takes what he learnt in Marketing 101and instead of saying there are no other gods, he says there's no need for any other gods when you've got this one God that does it all.

Do you get it? The company I work for makes millions this way. I wonder how much that guy made.

No. You are taking this from the Ten Commandments (The Old Law). What it means is that there should be no idol worship of other gods, b/c they are not the One True GOD, or the Supreme Being.

It's all about NOT worshipping other gods, and usually in Christianity this is translated to material things.

There were people worshipping fake idols way back to the bible times and people were calling them Gods. God himself knew that is what they call them so that is why he said to not have any other Gods before him. He didnt say that b/c there was other Gods he was just saying that to make a reference as to not.

I'm thinking that's not what God meant. He might have been leveling with mortals, trying to explain things on their level. In those days people had many idols and gods, sometimes even someone's own house had a particular god of it's own. Our God, out of his infinite care and, of course, compassion was saying, "I am the Lord thy God, have no other pagan, wooden, uncaring, faceless and fake gods before me." I believe He meant for us to put no other earthly, carnal gods before Him; it's more than likely He knew we'd be "worshiping" money, gold, people, idols, and mythological gods who do not excist.

Satan has the power to put ideas and visions into man's heads, and then in his weakness, man believes he's recieved a sign from his "god". As a fallen angel, Lucipher(Satan) has a lot of power, but he will only use it to destroy men's souls, so that they will have to be thrown into the lake of fire with him. He will woo many a soul into his snare, by false gods and thoughtless worshiping of idols.
Here is what it says after that verse:
Exodus 20:3-6
"You shall have no other gods before me.

"You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand of those who love me and keep my commandments."
-or-
Leviticus 19:4
"Do not turn to idols or make gods of cast metal for yourselves. I am the LORD your God."

No, it doesn't affirm mythological "gods" or any other gods. It means false gods, which can be a golden cow, or Athena, zeus, Isis, mother earth, or anything you love more than god, like booze, drugs, sex, television, sports, porn, your job. Anything you elevate to the place where God is.

Actually, in the Bible it reads, "..have no other gods before me..." with a lowercase "g"....other gods are anything you place above (or serve) instead of the real God. ie: money, success, idols....God realizes that people will admire other things, and so is thus telling us that He should be first and then those other things.
