Chicken may be defrosted in cold water in its airtight packaging or in a leak proof bag. Submerge the bird in cold water, changing the water every 30 minutes to be sure it stays cold. A whole (3 to 4-pound) broiler fryer should defrost in 2 to 3 hours.
Chicken defrosted in the microwave should be cooked immediately after thawing because some areas of the food may become warm and begin to cook during microwaving. Holding partially cooked food is not recommended because any bacteria present wouldn't have been destroyed.

Dethawing to me means the chicken is frozen solid in the freezer. You can use the microwave to deforst it using the lower powered defrost settings. A slower way is to immerse the chicken in hot water or under hot water running from your tap. Will take longer that way though and also dependds upon the size of the chicken too.

You seem to be confusing thaw with defrost. To dethaw a chicken would require freezing it.

Either in a bowl or sink of cold water or the old fashioned way I was raised doing and never got sick from, on the counter for a few hours on a baking sheet or in a shallow casserole dish

I usually usse the micro on low to speed things up and then the chicken goes into a marinade and refrigerated. Legs and thighs go into the micro until they are pliable and then into the marinade and the fridge. Boneless skinless breasts thaw pretty quickly

sit it in cold water believe it or not the cold water will defrost it or thaw it faster than hot water. put it in a bowl of cold water and stick it in the fridge. but if you want to hurry this process stick it in the bowl in the sink unplugged and let the water run over the top of it. it'll be thawed quickly.

Submerge it in slightly warm water, like in the sink. You'll be surprised how fast it thaws, and you won't risk cooking part of it by microwaving.

You could use cold salt water. I really don't like to use microwaves but you can use as much salt as you want but don't let it get too un thawed if your going to bake it it will be juicy and cook for 1to 2 hrs. rember to rinse it well after unthawing.

Put it in the microwave. Your microwave should have a defrost setting. My microwave tells me how long I would need for each meat.
