I guess I mean, is it a fire hazard to use a spray-painted lamp shade, if it's only the outside of the shade is painted?

I painted two fabric shades with spray paint over 9 years ago, they turn on with a timer every night and I haven't had any problems. I also gold leafed the insides, sealed it with polyurethane and they have become "antiqued" over time, but haven't caught on fire.

Spray Paint Lamp Shade

Spray painting the entire shade will discolor and smell bad from the heat from the bulb, and could be flammable.

I.e., if you spray it white, you'll get a brownish yellow burn spot from the bulb.

I know this from experience.

you should be fine, as long as you remove the lamp shade from the lamp before painting, lol. Good luck!

I dont think it would be if you dont spray the inside of it. If its a cloth shade, dont bother, Ive tried it and after a while it looks horrible, unless you get the spray thats made for cloth.
