I've also been researching hotels in NYC for my trip in November. For the price you are looking at, you WILL have to share a bathroom. It may be really, really tough to find a private bathroom for that price.
Here is a list of budget hotels in NYC that have great reviews, decent amenties and good rates.
Washington Square Hotel
Hotel 31
Hotel 17
Larchmont Hotel
Chelsea Pines Inn
Gershwin Hotel
Pickwick Arms
Chelsea Lodge
Chelsea Inn
Larchmont Hotel
sohotel
Hotel Belleclaire
Americana Inn
The foregoing are all hotels I personally considered for my stay, I made reservations at several and will narrow it down over the next few weeks. I'm leaning toward the Chelsea Inn because you only have to share a bathroom with one other room, plus they offer breakfast and an in-room safe, and its only two blocks from my seminar. The rates vary between $99(Larchmont) and $159 (Hotel Belleclaire). But, I am going in mid-November, so the rates are higher than the rest of the year. If you are willing the share a bathroom, these are among the nicest of the budget hotel bunch.
Also, try checking on Hotelconxions.com, orbitz.com., hotels.com And then compare their rates, with the rates of the individual hotels. Also, try looking a vacation rentals or bed & breakfasts (vrbo.com). I've done an EXTENSIVE amount of research on this subject, hours online, tons of guidebooks, and in my humble opinion, these seem to be the best. Hope this helps!
P.S. When I asked this same question a few weeks ago, all I got was "you can't do it's" and "it'll never happen". I hope you get more out of this then I got out of those useless answers! Cheer!

It depends on how many people you have.... I stayed last december in the Hotel Riverside Studios with one friend... It was in fact $80 per night... I had a good experience there... Now it depends on what level of luxury you live in as to whether you want to stay here or not. the room was small it had a queen bed.. night stand.. small fridge.. and tv.. the heating and ac was fine.. it is an older building.. and you DO have a private bedroom, however you do have to share a bathroom.. I did not find this a problem...it was very clean as far as my standards, not luxury at all..i am in college and it fit my budget..It is located at 462 west 71st street in the upper west side of manhattan.. it is only 2 blocks from the 72nd street 1,2,& 3 subway staion.. this is the red line you can go uptown or downtown from this station, and it connects directly to times square, 4 stops i think... nice neighborhood..I would stay there again.... sorry this is so long... hope it helps...

You won't find anything for under at least $150.00, except maybe a hostel with a dormitory style housing arrangement (lots of beds/bunkbeds in one room) or a small hotel where you will have to share a bathroom.
If you're willing to spend more, stay at one of the Hampton Inns in Manhattan, or a Howard Johnson in Manhattan, they have good rates and good rooms.
My recommendation is that you stay in New Jersey, look in the towns of Weehawken, Secaucus, or East Rutherford. From there you can hop a bus or ferry into NYC and see everything there is to see and then just hop back on a bus to go back to your hotel. Don't rent a car because you won't find parking anywhere in NYC unless you're willing to pay $25 or more (up to $50) each time you park in NY.

Unfortunately this is a situation that you can put any figure in your head. Doesn't mean that is what you will pay. I believe that you are being very unrealistic as to what you will pay. You must not travel very often at all. Even in a suburb you can pay $80.00 dollars for a motel 6!
Remember no matter what you find you GET what you pay for. So don't book something through a travel agent cheap, hate it and come back and complain to them even after they told you they wouldn't recommend that. It happens all to often. We try and warn travelers, but so many choose to hear what they want to hear.
Good Luck you are going to need it!

There's no such thing as any hotel in NYC under $120. If you want to spend less than $120 a day, then I would suggest renting a car and sleeping in the car.

Murray Hill you can get a room for around that but I believe you might have to share a bathroom. Good location though. The cheaper rooms are smaller and they go fast.
