It depends a lot on culture. When is a man capable to provide for his family? Usually is is after an education, or job experience. Also many times the woman also needs to have job experience or an education.

I think your answer to that question is in your attitude when asking it. The lack of respect for marriage and what it was intended, not for pleasure alone but, to represent something more wonderful and holy. The average teen today hasn't learned how to manage a house, budget, etc., etc. many things which the teen back then would have been taught before they would have been married. Also, the average life expectancy for people was much shorter (especially women) and if your only point is to start having affairs much sooner, my answer to that is don't be an animal.

People used to marry much younger than 14 - some as young at 10 or 12.
But people also used to be dead by 30 and 40 was OLD.

It is all cultural. I think the common denominator is that parents want their children to "get on with their lives" when the culture expects them to. If your culture decides that you are supposed to be family oriented and raise children, (btw it is not like they just dropped out of high school) then they do that after they have been trained in the home and reach puberty. If your culture dictates that both sexes should earn the living and be trained for jobs outside of the home then the parents have the children get the training/education they need to accomplish that goal then let them loose. Hence, in our culture our training for life ends later so we get married later.

Actually, in biblical times people married as young as 12.
Please remember, the religious right thinks that sex is 'dirty' or 'sinful'. NO ONE knows why they think this way, but they do. This country was settled by puritans and their backwards way of thinking still dominates.

it isn't the bible freaks, it is the feminists and queers.
They don't want people to marry at all.
If the bible freaks had their way, girls would have no choice and would be sold into marriage at puberty.
BTW, puberty used to be taken as the sign a child had become an adult. Only in modern times did we invent a totally arbitrary age (18/21) unrelated to anything to signify adulthood.

That´s because in religious times people died in their 30´s. Children were also promised in marriage to consolidate political or economical alliances. I don´t think sex had a lot to do.

Then it was all about the number of people in their cult. Why do you think the Muslims are growing so fast. Now we actually care about the quality of life the kids that are a result of these marriages have.
