I played Center in High school and used to get em all the time when I made helmet to helmet contact with another player. It is a muscle spasm that shoots down the neck into the shoulder and down the arm or spine. Stinks wicked bad and usually hurts for quite awhile but goes away. He'll be ok

it's a pinched nerve in the neck.. so long as that's all it is it's no big deal and will go away.. they do tend to happen a lot in that sport.. and tell your grandson to keep his head up next time :P
