Spirits are alcohol beverages that are distilled rather than fermented.
Fermentation = beer, wine, mead, etc...
Distilliation = Whiskey, vodka, gin, etc...

If they had all kinds of bottles on the wall/shelf behind the bar and you asked what kind of hard liquor they served, then the bartender was making fun of you. If you asked a waitress/waiter and they gave you a blank look and said 'no, we have spirits' it's probably because he/she is just a complete moron, a non-drinker working in a bar with absolutely no knowledge of alcohol at all, or just giving you a hard time and making fun of you.

Generally if you want to avoid confusion, ask for a specific style of the hard liquor you are looking for...something like 'Hey...what kinds of bourbon do you carry?'
If you are relatively new to spirits/hard liquor, find a bartender and a place that you feel comfortable with and just level with them. Tell them you are new to it and ask for their help and opinions. It sure beats trial and error if you have someone to help you along, and it will make the whole experience much more enjoyable.
If the bartender gives you any crap about it, politely leave and find another bar...seriously. There are a surprising amount of bartenders that are only there to pull beer taps and pour call drinks and have no idea what they are talking about. Their job is to serve you drinks and help you enjoy your time there, not to make fun of you or make you look foolish.

Are you in the USA? I am and I have never heard that term used in a bar. To the USA spirits means the same as hard liquor.Maybe they thought you meant something else like hard cider which is fermented apples juice and is not a hard liquor or spirit.
