On television programs, such as "EastEnders", occasionally the charactor will eat a typical British meal. I've been able to figure out what "Bangers and Mash" is, but what about "Beans on Toast". Obviously, it is beans and toast, but what kind of beans? white, pink, or what? Is the cooking liquid drained off or served with the beans? Is there a flavored sauce? Is anything else cooked with the beans? IE: Onion, Grated Carrot, Leeks? (Leeks aren't that popular with Americans). Any help will be greatly apperciated.

Beans on Toast is canned baked beans in tomato sauce on toast. I think that you might call these beans white beans or haricot beans in the US. They are canned in their own tomato sauce and the beans plus sauce are poured over the toast.... delicious!!

As you have worked out, bangers and mash is sausages and mashed potato (I like mine served with baked beans and pickled onions, but that's just the deluxe version!)

Other typically British "East End" style dishes include

* Pie and mash: a pie (usually beef or steak and kidney) served with mashed potatoes. Often served with gravy.

* Fish and Chips: Deep fried battered fish (usually cod, haddock or plaice) served with fried chipped potatoes (like thick-cut French Fries. Chips are in this case are definitely not what you would call chips in the US, which are what we would call "potato crisps")

* Jellied Eels - yep that's eels as in the fish, sliced into segments and cooked in jelly and eaten backbone and all - the cooking process makes the bones soft. Jelly in the UK is not what we spread on bread (with or without peanut butter) - we call that "jam". In the UK jelly is like Jello (although when served with jellied eels it's more like bone marrow jelly because it's derived from boiling the fish, including the bones)

* Toad in the Hole - sausages cooked in a batter like Yorkshire Pudding

* Boiled beef and carrots - I guess that one translates pretty well!

Bangers and Mash - bangers are a British sausage that has a high content of bread crumbs to the pork and pork fat and Mash are mashed potatoes.

Beans on Toast - Baked Beans (Heinz is the brand my mom always served) on buttered pieces of toast.

In Britain the most popular style is a version of the baked beans we have in North America, in tomato sauce.

But those manufactured in England by Heinz, can vary, they have ones like here and then there are ones with sausages, some ethnic varietys, like Jalfrez, a spicy Indian variety, so it is up to you, my gran from Liverpool like to serve them on toast with gravy over top, find out there favorite way, but make sure you start with the ones in tomato sauce, not with pork, you can a meat them in the final process.
