is this THAT common?

i remember when i was about 11, i disclosed this "secret" information to a girl friend of mine. and she told me ever so nonchalontly that her dad molested her too. then asked if i wanted to play barbies.

since then i have met so many women as well as my gay best male friend that were molested as children.

again, is this THAT common? if so.. WTF?!?! why isn't more being done about this!?!?!?!?

It happens alot because there are alot of sick people in the world that think they can get away with harming children.

It's not more common than it used to be; it's just more commonly reported now, or acknowledged. I guess we live in a society now where it's more acceptable to disclose it. But I don't think that means it is any more common than it was before. It has always been very common. As to why this is, who knows. We could debate about the media and early sexualization of children and violence and whatever else - I don't know why. I know that children are not well supervised and that many of these cases are older children preying upon younger children.

Yes, it is that common. Why isn't more being done? I think all the attention on this problem and all the teaching and training in schools and whatever has been on STRANGER molestations, and that is the vast minority of cases. Most who are molested are molested by a family member, family friend, peer, etc. They need to do more teaching about those kinds of incidents.

It is common, but in my experiance what makes it more common is that now without knowing you can pick out the people who have been molested, and those who havent. I myself was molested (being one of the 1/4 males) and now that I look back at my life realize that I have gravitated to those who have been as well. It is not something I knew before hand, but just some how felt. Most of my girlfriends have been molested and quite a few of my friends have been aswell. But the one or two of my friends who have not been molested (they do not know about me) can not think of a single person that they know who has. So I have come to the conclusion over the years that yes it is very common indead, but seems to occur more often then it really does because now I can see it in people and seem to surround myself by these people because I am comfortable in their pressence. As far as why more has not been done about this, well...like me I believe most people do not report it/speak about it/act apon it other then in private(anonymous) discussion such as this or amongst trusted friends and family.

You seem to be saying that from your own experiences some very bad stuff that happened to you is not that common. It may not be as common as press would have you believe, but there are enough sickos out there to be highly concerned.
It's interesting to read how social morays have changed. In 17th century in Europe families use to walk around nude in their houses, so imagine what we now very rightfully called molested happened frequently. Read about life of Lewis Carol he was ten times worse than M Jackson. Love how with all his money there were taboos that brought him down. Think improvement is needed, but things are far better now than recent past. The notion that man's house is his castle is gone forever.

When I was growing up I don't recall any of my friends telling me that they were molested, now that I am much older I find just about 2/3rds of my friends have been. I don't know if it is all true or if it is just something they make up. I realize that some were molested but how can this all be hidden, what is wrong w/our families now?

I was not molested as a child, so I guess I'm a rare case now! My mom was though when she was very young. It is disgusting.
