and when I check my heartbeat monitor, I noticed my pulse was in the 170s but I was wasn't even the least bit winded. I thought it might have been wrong but I checked my radial pulse and it was 176. What is the reason for this? Is this normal? Good? Bad?

I agree with Mark. I have a heart rate monitor and every now and then it goes nuts on me too, especially when I first start out. It probably slipped or lost connection with your heart and it basically interpolates what you should be at while it tries to "reconnect".

If you weren't pushing it, I'd suspect that is what happened. If you are under 40, a heart rate of 170 during exercise isn't dangerous at all. Either you are super fit if it didn't bother you or it was a malfunction. (Some elite marathoners bring their heart rates up over 200 for most of the race).

Usually I can bring mine to about 170 and 180 if I am closing towards the finish line during a race (it's been a while since I've worn one), so you'll definitely know 170 when you hit it (sort of gets painful).

Good luck.

Sounds high to me - but I would suspect the monitor might be wrong and checking your own pulse is rarely accurate. I seem to remember the heat monitor at the gym usually records my heartbeat at around 140-150 when I finish running, but I am 38 and it does vary with age. If you are younger, the safe higher limit is greater.

Why not get a relative or friend to check your pulse - but I very much doubt you have a problem, its not like you are breathless or anything.

If despite all your findings, you are still worried, then get the doc to put your mind at rest.

I think you should be fine, honestly. Mine gets to a little above that when I work out, even when I'm not neccesarily tired out.

I don't really know much about heart rate, but I'd assume that there is variation throughout your workout. Unless you feel incredibly weak or as if your heart is going to come out of your chest, I wouldn't be too worried.
