Fixing bad breath depends on what's causing it. In 80 to 90 percent of cases, it's due to something in the mouth. Most often, it's nothing more serious than a dirty mouth. Plaque, the nearly invisible film of bacteria that's constantly forming in your mouth, is often responsible for bad breath. Other dental culprits include cavities and gum disease.
Occasionally, bad breath is due to something in the lungs or gastrointestinal tract or to a systemic (bodywide) infection. However, eating a garlicky meal is one of the most common causes. The strong odors of foods such as garlic, onions, and alcohol are carried through the bloodstream and exhaled by the lungs. Another big loser when it comes to bad breath is tobacco.

In addition, some health problems, such as sinus infections or diabetes (which may give the breath a chemical smell) can cause bad breath.

Here's what you can do to keep your breath as fresh as possible:
1. Keep your mouth clean. That means a thorough brushing twice a day and flossing regularly. Food and bacteria trapped between teeth and at the gum line can only be removed with floss. If they're left to linger, bad breath is imminent.
2. Clean your tongue, too. Bacteria left on your tongue can contribute to less-than-fresh breath. Be sure to brush your tongue after you brush your teeth.

3. Wet your whistle. A dry mouth can quickly cause bad breath. Saliva helps clean your mouth; it has a natural antibacterial action, and it washes away food particles. That awful morning breath is the result of reduced saliva flow at night.

4. Rinse. If nothing else, at least rinse your mouth with plain water after eating. Swishing the water around may help to remove some of the food particles left in the mouth after a meal and prevent bad breath from setting in.

5. Munch on parsley. Munching on parsley or spearmint won't cure bad breath, but the scent of the herb itself can help to temporarily cover up offending oral odor.

6. Eat to smell sweet. Foods that help fight plaque may also help fight bad breath. Opt for celery, carrots, peanuts, or a bit of low-fat cheese if you want something to snack on.

All of the tips above will help your breath smell better, but figuring out the cause of bad breath is the best way to lick it for the long term.

Yes, bacteria causes bad breath and without having fillings, the bacteria have an effective place to prevent themselves from being cleaned, thusforth promoting a smell as time goes on. While volatile sulfur compounds are the principle causative agents of bad breath, the bacteria that live in our mouths also produce other waste products and some of these have their own unpleasant odors too. Either getting Listerine or other antibacterial mouthwashes help stop the bacteria who create the sulfur compounds that are the cause of bad breath, I'd also suggest getting a mouthwash that aided in destroying the sulfur compound that creates the bad breath itself. Chlorine Dioxide will do the trick for this. Combine this two mouthwashes with Regular flossing, brushing and dentists appointments, not to mention the occasional tongue scraping, and you should be all clear in the mouth department.

I was told that bad breath was usually caused by not flossing correctly. If you floss so that the edge of the tooth under the gum is cleaned of plack it should improve the situation. The tongue is also a reason, but cleaning that when you brush is easy.

I've heard of halitosis as a chronic bad breath problem, but I don't know if that's real or if there's even a cure. Try the flossing first.

Eat some fresh pineapple as it does wonders for cleaning your tongue, the main cause of bad breath. Then drink more water every day than you have been doing so far. Keep fresh pineapple in the house for a week or so to eat some every day until your breath is OK.

Bad breath is caused by bacteria collecting in your mouth in hard to reach places such as the back of the tongue and between teeth. This is called halitosis and is very common. The only thing that I would recommend as a dental assistant is using listerine once or twice daily and making sure to brush the back of your tongue every time you brush. You can buy tongue scrapers at any store if a toothbrush makes you gag. Good luck!

Bad breath is not always caused from inside your mouth.
Post nasal drip can give you a bad taste in the back of your mouth.
Tonsils can cause bad taste too if food trapped in them etc.
Gastric problems can also be a cause of bad breath.

Hope this helps................if you search these online you will find some info.

Do you drink enough water?

A dry mouth encourages means that the smell emmited as bacteria break down the sugar on your teeth becomes more noticable.

Drink 6 - 8 glasses of water per day, and more if ever you feel thirsty!

Try using A mouthwash called Retardex, I think it's made by Colgate. It contains a tomato extract that neutralizes bad smells. ( they use this to get rid of the smell if your sprayed by a skunk so it should work on bad breath)
