You definately sound as though you don't have the confidence in designing your home. I have a degree in interior design and lay-out and it is a big challenge even for those who are experienced. I suggest you either contact a professional in your area to assist you or if you still want to tackle this job yourself, you need to take one room at a time and let the room speak to you for what purpose it will serve. If you have a fireplace, staircase and front door entry, these 3 areas need to be accentuated more than any other area in the house. There is a symbolic meaning to these 3 areas. I suggest you pick up some decorating books for ideas. Whatever you chose, you need to stay with that idea. It is very easy to lose focus when the world is a colouful palette. Good Luck!

Start by taking a look in your closet. See what kinds of colors you like by looking at your garments because generally speaking, people wear colors that they are partial to. Then start looking in books and magazines for rooms that appeal to you you. Make a list of what all of the rooms you chose have in common or the things specifically you liked. For example, are the wood tones light or dark, how does the room feel (comfortable, energized, calm) and what type of fabrics are shown (textures, smooth), are the colors in the same family, etc. Remember that the room you design is a reflection of who you are, what you like, how you live and where you have been. Consider what you want to say about yourself to others who will see the room. Also, consider how you would like the room to function. What will you do in each room, read, watch TV, craft, do work, pay bills, etc.
As you do this, check out websites and TV shows on HGTV or DIY network. Look at some of the rooms they design. As you go through this process, colors, fabrics, designs (contemporary, traditional, modern, etc) will be a continuous thread that will give you direction as to how you want to decorate each area. Plus, if you compile all of your pictures in a notebook, you will have something to show as you shop for the items you will need. Take pictures of the furniture you already have, the rooms you want to design and accessories you would like to use.
Visit model homes in your area, too. You will be surprised at the wealth of information you can find there. They usually use designers who can tell you where to find a particular flooring, or what paint color they used or where to purchase a particular piece of furniture. You can see in 3-D living color rooms that you would like to replicate in your own home.
It will all come together for you, if you do a little research about yourself, how you live and what you enjoy beforehand. Good luck and enjoy yourself on the journey.

For large pieces - sofa, chairs - it's best to use a neutral color, without a lot of busy pattern. Otherwise choose things you find beautiful and pleasing.
Look through home-type magazines, pull out the pages that have decorating elements you enjoy. Keep them in a folder to review later. You will get lots of ideas for all the rooms of your home.
Watch decorating shows on TV. HGTV is interesting. I'll bet your home will be gorgeous! Have fun.
