There are pros and cons to travelling to NYC in August. The main con is that it is HOT. This isn't so bad if you're in the type of city where you go from air conditioned car to air conditioned building, but if you travel to NYC you will be doing a lot of walking around. This can get very uncomfortable, especially with all the concrete soaking up all the heat and making it even hotter. Not to mention the subway platforms are absolutely stifling in the summer.
The pros are that there is a lot of stuff going on like free concerts in Central Park, Shakespeare in the Park, art exhibits, and other things. You would have to make an effort to find this kind of thing, though, these are not your standard tourist attractions but it's a lot of fun. Beaches are open, parks are pretty, and restaurants with outdoor decks are great to be in.
So, that being said, there's more cool stuff that happens in the first half of the month, but it's a little hotter. There's a little less stuff happening at the end of the month, but it's not quite so hot. You make the call.

August is a great time to be in Manhattan. It is generally the quietest that it will be all year, since the "city" goes on vacation. Less crowds, traffic & you have better opportunities to get deals on B'way or the cities numerous attractions. I much prefer August in NYC, then say. . .February!

No, it gets really hot and especially humid in NYC in August. Some days are really unbearable and we tend to have a few blackouts in August do to power usage. May/June is really nice. So is October.

The weather is a crapshoot, could be real hot or could be 80 with no humidity -- absolutely great. And there are tons of summer events and a lot of them for free.

Yes, August is great. September and October are better... less crowded, and nicer weather.

One other factor: everybody who thinks they're anybody is out in the Hamptons! You decide if this is a good or bad thing. :-)
