As you can tell by the answers given, there is a wide interpretation of bonfire and late!

Huntington Beach has fire rings, as well as Newport and Balboa to the south. Most of the beaches stay "open" until 10pm technically, but I don't imagine the lifeguards/patrol would get too testy until 11pm.

You can get a good size fire going, but by no means will it be a bonfire of the homecoming game variety. It is a nice size to roast marshmallows and sing songs while someone plays the guitar.

And always try to get a pit in the farthest upwind row. If you are in a downwind section you will feel like you've been fighting a forest fire by the time you leave for the night!

Good luck and happy s'mores!

Huntington Beach has more than 600 large concrete fire rings to manage blazes safely and efficiently. Whether you want a beach barbecue; hotdog and marshmallow roast for the kids; S’mores; or intimate bowl of embers in the cool night air, fires are permitted in the rings without restriction.

Fire rings are free and available on a first-come, first-serve basis. You can’t make a reservation. They are strategically located in long, wide rows between parking and the surf so it’s easy to haul firewood. On summer weekends they are highly coveted. Beachgoers frequently lay claim to them before noon.
