Contact paper would work, but leave a nasty permanent film on your window. Pull blinds with a curtain are the best, prettiest and most practical answer. Foil is just tacky, don't go there.

Window shades are cheap. If you are afraid of the hardware, cut the hardware off, re-inforce w/ tape and velcro it to the wall. For $25/ panel you can buy block-out shades that hang on a curtain rod. OR, nail a heavy quilt to the wall. We've used cardboard boxes before. Posters work nicely.

You can use contact paper. Pulls off easily. You can also buy poster paints (tempura paints) and paint your own little scene on the window or turn it into a stained glass window look. Cleans up with water.

They make contact paper for windows, some look like stained glass. I found some in a dollar store.
