If you are going darker, use a semi permanent color. Permanent colors lift and then deposit, since you are going darker, u need only to deposit, plus semi color is less damaging to the hair. If someone came to me and asked for this I would color with the semi and in between foil in the red, u can actually do this process at the same time. If you choose to do two different times, then wait a week in between coloring services and use a good shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair. Also, if you are going to do red any way why not just do the red and not do brown? If you want a brownish red, then you can a nice color to begin with, if you wait too long before you go red, you will have regrowth at the roots from the brown, assuming your hair is not brown to begin with...

I am a hair stylist and colorist so it depends on your natual hair color but color does not remove color and you can not go lighter just by adding the red. You woulld have to use color stripper to remove the darker color. If you put the red on, your roots will be really red compared to the rest of your hair. So be careful. If you want to go red use a darker red, the same level (darkness) as your hair is dyed now.

Wait a couple of weeks. Be careful when you dye your hair red because its really hard to get the red out if you get tired of it. Even if you dye it again after the red it will usually show through.

I think some people may be confused - do you want the final color to be darker than what you have now? when you dye your hair it conditions it by adding a coating of color, not damages it. (conversely when you lighten it - it strips the color - damaging it) If you want to go darker no need to wait weeks between dye jobs.

going from a darker shades to lighter shades is always better than just going right from DARK to LIGHT... it looks really fake if you do that so get a dark brown> depending on ur natural hair color and then get a lighter brown, then strawberry brown and then a reddish brown and then you can get closer to red until you get to red.
