I think more and more the sport of golf is being marketed to younger markets. It was once believed to be an old man's sport, but thanks to the likes of Tiger Woods, the sport is able to reach younger audiences. It really is a great game, and the media is finally pointing that out.

I agree with everyone on...
1) Marketing - getting much better, the sport is becoming more fashionable, the equipment is 1000 times better and much more promoted
2) America LOVES winners - so we LOVE a record breaker like Tiger Woods
3) Getting out of the house for 5 hours - its 5 hours away from it all
My thoughts....
1) Scholarship opportunities are having parents push their kids into golf as a competitive high school sport
2) Technology is making it MORE FUN and EASIER to play. Bigger drivers made of materials that produce trampoline like effects, irons that are so forgiving you can hit if off the hosel and still get on the green, putters that do the work for you, wedges that reduce shanks, etc etc etc. Nobody wanted to play golf because it was SO HARD. It’s become much easier in the last 10 years. Only reason handicaps haven't gone DOWN is that more and more newcomers are playing golf each year.

Just as many people quit the game who get into it every year. Marketing has alot to do with golf's popularity as does Tiger Woods. What happens though is that the golf swing is presented as a very complicated thing, so people quit in frustration after trying 50 different methods.

I have heard via recent reports that it is declining in popularity. All of those 25-35 year olds that started 8-10 years because of Tiger, are now having babies and finding that it just takes too much time (7-8 hours on a Sat) and/or that it is too expensive. Many golf companies are going out of business, courses are discounting private fees, and ranges are shutting down. I don't have real stats, but have read a lot of stories about it.

Here's a little tongue-in-cheek with a hint of truth:
It gets guys out of the house and away from the wife and kids. Costs a lot so it keeps the "less-desirable people" away. It's a status symbol. It's a way for mostly white guys to bond and feel good about themselves. Way for white ladies to meet yuppie white guys. Very competitive...and it doesn't hurt like real man sports. So little guys can kick big guys' butts. It's real fun to cruise around on electric carts. It can be fun too...I wouldn't know though.
