they can't tell time, they know the sound of your car in the driveway and they run over to the door to wait for you, I've seen my cats do this
as for the alarm...do you feed your cats right after you wake up? if so, then they know because they are getting hungry and they know they get fed soon. ie) my sister feeds our cats when she wakes up for practice at 4am, one cat sleeps with me, and I sleep with my door shut, every morning I have to let her out at 4am because she knows she's about to be fed. It has nothing to do with the alarm clock, and everything to do with how hungry they are

We have a two year old cat, she wakes up the same time everyday for work, when my husband comes home she knows when he is going to be home she sits at the door because I think she can hear our car before it hits the drive way, she also knows what time we eat, she uses the litter box at the same time everyday too.

Internal cat clocks...my cat has gotten into a habit of eating at 5am. (when hubby goes to work) so now that he's in Iraq....she's standing on my chest meowing. Gah!
She also knows the "proper" bedtime...she'll come sit on whatever I'm doing or butt her head against me...
great question! I'll keep an eye on this one.

Yes, from the way my cat behaves sometime I would think she has a wristwatch on. But, seriously I think it has something to do with light of day. Or when they hear the birds waking up. They probably just associate these events with something you do.

my land lady says that about 5-10 mins before my boyfriend gets home from work she can hear our 2 cats running around up there waiting for him to come in the door.
also they know their food times, they find us and tell us it's getting close to that time they start meowing about 15 mins before time.

We feed our kitties at 4:00. If someone isnt in the kitchen to feed them, or getting up just before, they hunt down my mom or me for food. Its bizzare!
