My vet is also having problems finding it. She has prescribed it due to mites and he is a rat terrier and the ivermectin (Number 1 choice) caused him seizures which is only supposed to happen in collies. I am scared though this may also cause him seizures.

I am in California using a military base vet. She did call the company you mentioned. He has demodex mites. Now during the course of the day she is ordering a dip for him, Amitraz. The other she researched and said it has the same side effects as the ivermectin. I feel so bad as he is miserable...She is hoping it only takes a few days to come in. Is there anything I can do for him until I get the dip?? Thank you!

It's a prescription product. You'll have to call your veterinarian to get it from them, or get a written prescription (if your pet is a current patient and is a candidate for it....just like any other prescription medication for animals or humans.)

It is not available over-the-counter. That requires specific approval by the FDA....which has determined that it doesn't qualify for that at this point.

Edit: Don't know why she'd tell you she's having trouble finding it. It's a Novartis product....all she has to do is call her account rep. There's no way she doesn't have one, as all of us use SOME type of Novartis product in our practices. (Unless it's on backorder for some reason....but I am unaware of any problems there.) I'm off today, so don't have the number handy for my Novartis rep to ask. Good luck!

P.S. You could always google to see if you can find a number for them yourself....numbers for the general public are different than the ones we use....but you could at least ask them to contact your veterinarian for you. And you can always use plain milbemycin anyway, which most of us keep in stock all the time. The praziquantel part is for tapeworms, not mites. (What TYPE of mites, btw....? Is she using this as an alternative treatment for demodex? If so, all you really need is the plain milbemycin, which is just regular Interceptor. They sell it in bulk for that particular use, to make it more affordable.)

Just had a thought....are you in the United States??? Or another country? (Because I was assuming you were in the U.S.)

That is right, it is strictly a prescription product. You must get it from the vet, or get a prescription from the vet to get it cheaper...if you live in a state where the vet has to do that for you. Some states let the vet decide if they want to do that or not.

I would not think the vet would have trouble finding it either. It is a very common product. I guess I would also ask if you are in the US.
