not get mad if he spends time with an ex?
Are most men selfish, or are some just too controlling?

I have to agree, and admit that most men are selfish. It is not uncommon for men to behave exactly as you describe.
I would not agree that this is acceptable. All of us humans are capable of learning behaviours that counter some of our instincts in order to live among others without constant conflict.
These learned behaviours are called tact, cooperation, tolerance and by other names that have often been associated with the "feminine" side of humanity.
Men can either "tolerate" this selfish behaviour among the company of other men, or they seek to resolve the coflicts by combat or other ritualized forms of combat. Men seem to be okay with this.
What does not work, and should not be tolerated is for men to expect women to participate in this kind of socialization. This will not work any more than men can expect to get any enjoyment out of the games women play at bridal showers, for example.
When men and women interact, even when in a coupled state, each of their behaviors needs to be modified to take into account, each other's point of reference.

Everyone can be selfish-men and women! But, it doesn't seem to me that you are dealing with a selfish person. You are dealing with a control freak! He want you to be available to him on his terms! NOT GOOD

Sounds like your talking about my dad. He is so delusional, that my mom can't even have a civilized friendship with him without him assuming that she still wants him.
But, not all men are selfish. You just have to go to a Science Fiction convention and pick yourself out a cute little nerd who will treat you like a goddess.

I don't think it is most men. I think there is a TYPE of man that is selfish and controlling. Keep fishing for the other type.

No, just not as emotional of intuitive as women are. They are more logical and it isn't intentional that they don't do everything a woman wants. It is just that they are very different in the way they are wired. A woman wants and needs love, while a man wants and needs respect.

No, most men aren't selfish, but some will push you around if you let them. If you are with someone who behaves like your description it is time to stand up for yourself and push back. If there is a fight - call his bluff and walk out...do NOT go back.

real men do not act that way just the ones that have had their mommies take care of them, and when they grow up they want someone like their mommy to be there for them-- not all men are that way-- just the pampered and controlling ones
