Well... a news report came out that I saw that said a charity was taking these products (shampoo, cologne, toothpaste) and giving them to the homeless at shelters. At least at a few airports. Not a bad idea if you ask me.

That'll be a good smelling bum.

Opened probably goes in the trash. Unopened materials may go to those retail stores that air companies have. Each air travel company has a retail store that sells all lost luggage and items that are not claimed after a certain period of time. They are like Goodwill stores, only it's all unclaimed baggage.
You can find all kinds of things there, from clothing to souvenirs that people forgot to take. Each time you buy a plane ticket you agree to claim your baggage and possetions by a certain time period, if not they can do whatever they want with it.

They are saying they derive their authority to confiscate goods from passengers by identifying them as "potetially dangerous when carried in aircraft" The cologne is a inflammable liquid.

Every action can be repsented by a hierarchy of actions that have its origin at the top, OM.

I wouldn't be surprised.. There is also a store back east somewhere that buys/takes all the unclaimed luggage form one/some airline(s) and sells it (at a great discount off retail) in their store. I would imagine that perhaps some items like the one you described may have ended up there.

If you had said something to them about it they are obligated to mail it via mail. My in-laws were coming back from Alaska and they had about 6-8 packages coming from the airport. The only thing is you have to pay shipping fees.

Honestly...they pitch it. They keep a big trash can by the metal detectors and all of it gets dumped in the trash. Your best bet if you want to keep all that stuff is to put it in your luggage and have it checked in...instead of putting it in your carry on.

In the trash. Sorry that is why they said don't bring liquids or check your bags.
