If there is poop in it, it's coming out ASAP. Other than that, everytime I come by it, and every so often, if I see a wet clump, it's coming out. It's just a place for them to go, and everyone and everything wants a clean toilet.
Nothing is worse than going over to someone's house and having lunch while while in the side room to the kitchen is a dirty litter box staring at you. You are eating a sandwich, and with every bite you can see and smell a little tootsie roll sitting there. OMG! -_+ And the ammonia smell of cat pee will permeate a house or apartment if it sits there, so that you smell it whenever you come in, even when the cat and box are long long gone.
If he doesn't get it, put the box in the kitchen and serve lunch. Give him the scoop patrol for a day or two and you will never hear him complain again.

Better to be safe than sorry. Cats do like their toilets clean, their noses are so much more sensitive than ours. If you can smell the litterbox, believe me, the cat might be ready to turn his nose up at it.
I am not as scrupulous about cleaning the boxes and changing the litter once a week. I use World's Best Cat Litter and my boxes don't smell. I just scoop out the stuff and put another scoop in. If there is some poopy clinging to the edges (seldom) then I do clean the boxes with soap and hot water.
So maybe by using this expensive litter I am not really spending extra money. It is corn and biodegradable, dustless, and clumps really well.

I personally scoop the box once or twice a day, and about once a month sometimes less often dump it all. If you're worried he might get the idea to start going in the wrong places you can buy a special litter or litter additive called cat attract. We used it for a while and it got my cat who was abused and afraid of going in the litter box b/c of the hood to start going in the box. You can find it at some pet stores but not at walmart or target. It's a little expensive but it's worth it for the extra piece of mind.

In the morning before I leave for work
In the evening when I return from work
My cats will let me know when theres 'stuff' in there! The will scratch on the door until someone comes to clean out the box.
Clean Box = Clean Cats = Healthy Cats = Happy Humans

I get Fresh Step litter. It's scented and it clumps really well. I scoop the litter box once per day, and I completely clean the whole thing out about once per month or so. Seems to work just fine. My cats have never had any accidents in the floor.

You're doing the right thing. Ask your hubby how he would feel if you only flushed the toilet every other day or if you just decided to only clean the bathroom when it was totally rank and disgusting. Or just think of the last time you used a public port-a-potty. Yuck!
Cat's are very clean animals. They do not like gross stinkiness. They will start pooping in houseplants if they think the litterbox isn't clean enough.
If you do get overwhelmed with the cleaning though, consider investing in one of those automatic self-cleaning litterboxes. They're expensive but I hear they work great.

I scoop my litter box twice a day at least. I change the litter and wash out the pan at least once a week, sometimes twice. I don't think that you are being obsessive at all.
At this point, the cat is used to having his/her litter box cleaned every day. If you change this it may cause it to start going else where. Cats are very finicky creatures and they don't really like change.

clean it every day and change it once a week if you have two cats clean it everyday and change the litter twice a week plus even though you may clean that litterbox everyday a cat does it's buisness around the house to one mark territory mostly males though and two if they are stressed,if there have been any sudden changes toi there surroundings or placement of there food, water, litterbox toys and catnip too!:) they are very picky they will even do there buisness around your house if you ignore them or anger them it's weird but true there human!:) also p.s. a cat starts marking your house if you bring in a new cat too. it doesnt always happen but it may dont get mad at your cat shes showing you shes your and to care for her more because the new cats in the house your exsisting cat is showing her up telling her shes the boss!:)

You are ok on how you are doing it. Everyone's animal is different and how often they clean the litter box. I scoop my cats litter box every night or day and change it every two weeks and that seems to work fine with them.

I have 2 cats who use one litterbox so I clean mine out every day after I come home.
I dump the old litter out every Sunday and put fresh litter in.
P.S. I use Fresh Step Clay Cat Litter which is honestly the worlds best!! it's made with an odor eliminator that really works!!
cats will NOT use a dirty litterbox so you're doing the best thing.
you're NOT a fanatic either. jsut somebody who wants a CLEAN & FRESH smelling house to come home to.
you're like me! =^-^=
Good Luck!
