Valerie's letter to other prisoners in "V for Vendetta" gave me an answer to that.
"....It's strange that my life should end in such a terrible place, but for three years I had roses and I apologized to nobody.

The little bit of integrity, the bit that is your true self, the bit that knows who you really are and what you really think, the bit that says "NO!" and struggles to survive. That's an important thing to pin your hopes on.

that man will eventually realize everyone is still searching for the right path and there are many right paths one can follow. one has to choose which is the best path for him.
