well depending on how it is written and how it is used in a sentence, it can mean three things:
-of course (sûr = sure-confident)
ex:- veux-tu aller au cinéma (would you like to go to the movies?)
-bien sûr (of course)
-very sour (sur = sour)
ex: - cette pomme est bien sure. (this apple is very sour. (we write sure with the 'e' on the end cause 'pomme' is a feminine word)
-well on (sur = on)
ex: -mets le livre bien sur la tablette. (put the book well on the shelf.)

The colloquial translation is "of course," but literally it means, "very sure" as in "I'm very sure of what you said."
