I have 2 kitties and they both do this. Sometimes even when I'm not reading the paper. I have several theories:

1. They want my attention. And since I don't appear to be doing anything important, I should be playing with them.
2. The paper feels cool to lay on, kind of like how we humans always like the cool side of the pillow.
3. My kitties always like to get cuddles but mainly when we're not moving around -- after cuddles usually lead to naps and you can't nap with mom and dad if they're moving around. When we're reading the paper or a magazine we're really still, they assume this is great time for a nap or a cuddle. This is probably the best reason because they also like to cuddle up on our tummies when my husband and I are in bed watching TV.

Cats are the center of attention, and How Dare You Ignore Them! Haha... my cats do this to moe and my husband all the time. They think that obviously there is nothing more important that them, so we usually solve this situation by paying quite a bit of attention to our cats when we get home from work, and then doing our paper reading, and other things later. If they persist on being into everything, give them a little attention, and move them to the side...

I think it's to get your attention. My cats do the same thing. Every time I'm trying to read a magazine, the newspaper, or even paperwork they always seems to lay right in the middle of what I'm trying to look at.

I had a cat that did the same thing. I could only guess that the cat liked paper.

So does mine. When he is in that independent mood and decides to come to me when HE feels like it, all I have to do is read the paper! Nothing like ignoring a cat to get his attention!
My cat does it when we are playing a board game, he has to lie down right in the middle of it.
When I am on the phone, he wants to lie in my lap! I think it's just a bid for attention.

This is a way of getting your attention..Cats aren't going to jump up and down in front of you and lick your face like a dog. They sit in front of you and stare at you instead:) Also, cats seem to like the feel of paper and the crackling noise it makes..My little cat loves to sleep on the newspaper, she waits for it to appear everyday so she can run over and curl up..Plus it's so fun for them to stick their paws under it and hear the noise..

The cat wants your attention but I think that cats also like the noise that paper makes when it crinkles. I don't know why!!!

Hehe! Cats always do this. Just think of it this way... Can your cat read? No, he just sees it as you putting down a piece of paper for him or her to roll around on.

Not sure, but cats do seem to love doing that. Also they love sitting on the newspaper one happens to be reading, or should I say trying to read. LOL!
