i doubt it is trying to give any sort of message. It probably has got somewhere outside which it finds more interesting than being indoors; or it could have found a mate...though this would be unusual. Cats usually mate at night so that would be a more opportune time to go AWOL. Animals have also got personality...even animals which have a very close bond with their owners have been known to run from home. The owners would probably do well to make sure the cat is well fed and in a clean environment and they wouldnt need to make much fuss then.

I don't think it is giving any type of message. The cat obviously likes to roam. This is quite common among felines.
Most cats just come home when they are ready unless it was an inside cat that accidentally got out. Then it may be lost.

My cat does that too sometimes. It could be that he has found a girl cat that has caught his interest.
It could be they just have an independent cat who will come when HE feels like it.
My cat likes to hide. It's like he thinks he is is playing a game with you by hiding where you can't find him.
He also did this once becasue he didn't like me putting him outside. He goes out when it is HIS idea. But he didn't like me PUTTING him out!
Cats think they are boss not the ohter way around. They just let you open the can! Seriously that's how they see it.

The cat may be deaf, Or simply prefers being with another family, which is the problem others cause by feeding cats that they think are strays but maybe are not!

Cats are their own creatures and will only ever come home for food or sleep - they should try and train them by giving them ham/bacon wen they're called its helps although won't solve the problem

The animal could be sick or hurt. It could be in heat. Cats have a mind of their own and they do their own thing. But, if they don't come home, it could mean a lot of things.

My cat does similiar things...especially at night. The best thing is not to feed it dinner until you want him/her to come back home. I usually tap a saucer with a spoon and call her name. if she is hungry, she'll come straight away, then just keep the doors closed once she's in!
